Ebook About From the bestselling author of Matchmaking for Beginners comes a novel about love, loss, and the beautiful mess of family.Marnie MacGraw and Patrick Delaney have been in love for a few years now, enough to realize that they are imperfectly perfect together. Still, there are some things that maybe need a little attention. Marnie’s ebullient; he’s brooding. She thrives on change; he prefers stability. She sees marriage and parenthood in their future, but he can’t see beyond the shadow of an earlier tragedy. Then an eight-year-old surprise from Patrick’s past shows up on their doorstep, cartwheeling into their lives and spinning things in all directions. While it’s not exactly the change she envisioned, it looks like instant family to Marnie. But Patrick, afraid of being hurt again, retreats further into himself. Suddenly, two very different pieces of a beautiful puzzle find it harder and harder to fit. How can Marnie trust in the magic of the universe when it seems to be doing its best to knock her off her feet? But some love stories are worth waiting for. And what’s love without a little chaos anyway?Book A Happy Catastrophe: A Novel Review :
It figures that people would rave about this book, and glossing over all the issues within it. Patrick was suffering from PTSD, totally unhealed trauma, and also having to live with the fear of rejection due to his physical injuries. He was broken, and needed help. He also was always a bit introverted. Marnie made me sooooo mad. She said at the very beginning that she wanted a baby. Patrick said he didn't, and yet all Marnie thought about were ways to change his mind. She wanted a baby, dammit! Then Tessa and Fritzie came, and for a woman to drop her child with perfect strangers because her boyfriend doesn't want a kid around boggles the mind. Of course Patrick was scared in the beginning, but that wasn't a character flaw. Marnie was good with Fritzie, who annoyed the hell out of me from the first minute. Had she ever been told no, or to sit down and shut up? When she kept poking Patrick with bringing Annaliese up, I just wanted to slap her. I know she was heartbroken, and terrified, but her behavior should not have been tolerated, at the least. Their obeying her every command and allowing her to argue with them 24/7 was not good parenting at all, nor would it make her feel secure. Then as if Fritzie wasn't enough upset in the family, Marnie brings the chaos home, and thrives on inviting people to move in and take over their home, without even mentioning it to Patrick. She let a bunch of teens live in the basement with no supervision or guidance, when they should have been home with their parents. I know that if my partner had all those people around in my house, dancing and having wild times, I would go insane too, and yet all Marnie saw was what Marnie wanted. Then came her mother! I disliked how everything was Patrick's fault, and her own behavior and choices were blameless. The two were just not compatible. Also, recovering from trauma doesn't just happen by itself overnight. So, this is technically a sequel to Matchmaking for Beginners, which I didn’t even realize when I started. I will note, both novels can be read as stand-alone reads, but I do highly recommend Matchmaking for Beginners. I enjoyed A Happy Catastrophe, but not as much as Matchmaking for Beginners. Although there was still a lot of the light-hearted spirit in this novel, it didn’t capture the full element of magic and joie de vivre as the first novel. However, both novels really show the joy of love, almost renewing a faith in love=joy. Love can be lost in any long term relationship - it’s there, but it gets lost behind the monotony of everyday life. These novels really explode with the joy of love and light-heartedness that breathes life into your own life. Maddie Dawson really has a beautiful way of writing. She reels you in right from the start and she creates such imagery that you easily visualize the whole story. She can simultaneously make you laugh out loud and tear up. I know I’m not describing the plot at all. I think the description of the novel is sufficient and I don’t want to dissect the plot for this review. I will reiterate that I highly recommend starting with the Matchmaking for Beginners, which is such a beautiful novel.
